Satellite imagery published 19 August shows China has completed the first stage of construction at Antelope Reef in the Paracels — an artificial island of roughly 1,490 acres with a dredged lagoon harbour, piers, a helipad and buildings in place, and a runway assessed as potentially reaching 9,000 feet.
CSIS AMTI reports that eight months after dredging began, the finalised landmass at Antelope Reef measures 1,458 acres with no dredgers in sight, and that 4,300 feet of 180-foot-wide runway earthworks — matching China's Spratly and Woody Island runways — are aligned for an eventual 10,000-foot strip, alongside 200x200-foot hangar-scale foundations and two concrete plants.
